Mayfield, Enid (1945 - )Enid Mayfield is an illustrative researcher based at the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
Her illustrations appear in scientific publications such as the Flora of Australia.
She has also worked as an artist at the National Herbarium in Victoria and started with the Flora of Victoria project in January
1995.
She has also published the Flora of the Otway Plain & Ranges and an Illustrated Plant Glossary.
A Geelong resident, she has a
strong affection for the Botanic Gardens there and is working on a series of
paintings of plants from their extensive collection.
For Enid, the plant tells the
illustrator what to do. The skill is in reading this and laying down the details as
accurately and pleasingly as possible. The patterns, shapes and textures are
infinitely varied, especially under the microscope, each plant having its own
unique features.
It has taken many years of practice and study for Enid to
develop her skills, and she has done courses at RMIT and with Anita Barley.
She
has spent time with the artists at Kew Gardens in London and Le Jardin des
Plantes in Paris, and collects botanical art and books.
